How to Replace a Carburetor

Not every car engine issue requires the assistance of a mechanic. However, if you have basic knowledge about cars, you can easily tackle this task. After reading this simple How-To article, you are sure to learn how to handle car problems yourself.
First: Take out the old carburetor
Remove the hoses and fuel lines to the old carburetor. Put a tag on each line as you remove it, to ensure that you place it back in the correct spot. Remove the nuts that hold the carburetor to the intake manifold, then take the carburetor off. Take the old carburetor and match it to the new one.
Second: Install the new carburetor
First, clean the area where you are going to install the new carburetor by scraping off all dirt, the wipe off the area with a strong solvent. Put the new gasket in place; the gasket should have a light coating of gasket sealer on each side. Tighten the carburetor onto the intake manifold by tightening the nuts a little bit with a wrench, rotating them as you tighten them. Connect all the gas lines and vacuum tubes. Prime the carburetor with a small amount of gas, then start the engine. Next, put the air cleaner on, close the hood and take a test drive. If it hesitates or has no power, turn the screws that control the gas intake on the body of the carburetor; remember to turn them lightly because they are pre-set at the factory. If just a little turning one way and then the other does not help, bring it to a mechanic for adjustment.
